The life of a celebrity is no joke. While being famous does have its perks, countless stars suffer from addiction like millions of other people around the world. But, while most addicts get to work through their issues in private, celebrities are forced to do it in the public eye.
Despite the magnifying glass on them at all times, many celebrities who suffer from addiction have managed to overcome their issues thanks to rehab. While a sober lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight, here are some of the most famous celebrities to check into rehab over the years.
The former High School Musical star decided to go to rehab in 2013 after years of struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Since his stint in rehab, he’s lived a sober life.
Comedian John Mulaney has been open about his struggles with addiction in the past and even revealed he decided to get sober in 2005. However, he checked back into a 60-day treatment in December 2020 for alcohol and cocaine addiction.
Demi Lovato has been very open about her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. The popstar first went to rehab in November 2010 when she was just a teenager and worked hard to get sober in the years that followed. Lovato then entered rehab again in July 2018 after suffering from a nearly fatal overdose.
Ben Affleck first went to a Malibu rehab in 2001 for alcohol addiction. Then, after he and his ex-wife Jennifer Garner split, Affleck decided to go to rehab for a second time.
In a March 2017 post to his social media accounts, Affleck revealed alcoholism is “something I’ve dealt with in the past and will continue to confront… I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.”
The Academy-Award winner then went to rehab for the third time in August 2018.
After becoming an actor at a very young age, Drew Barrymore struggled early on with addiction. In fact, she first went to rehab when she was just 13 years old.
Robert Downey Jr.
The Avengers star began doing drugs when he was a kid and quickly became addicted to cocaine. He went to rehab multiple times in the late ‘90s, but it wasn’t until his final rehab stint in 2003 that he decided to get completely sober.
